Blue Winds Dancing: The Whitecloud Collection of Native American Art

Organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art, this exhibition highlights 30 years of passionate collecting by Dr. Thomas and Mercedes Whitecloud.  The exhibition presents a unique look at diverse works of art by various Native peoples from across the United States and Canada including textiles, baskets, apparel, moccasins, beadwork and bags.

Family Day
Saturday, October 6, 11:00 a.m. -3:00 p.m. Free with museum admission
Experience a fun-filled discovery of Native American cultures.  Listen to Cherokee legends, see art created with porcupine quills, experience the colorful dances of Plains tribes, and join your family in an art making activity.

Storytelling 11:00 a.m.
Children's book author Deborah Duvall and illustrator Murv Jacob will provide a lively reading in word and song from their selection of Cherokee legends.         

Artist Demonstration 12: 00 - 3:00 p.m.
Jerry Ingram (Choctaw/Cherokee) will demonstrate quilling, a traditional technique used by tribes in many regions of the United States. 

Family Art Activity 1:00 -2:30 p.m.
Participate in a drop in art activity led by an art instructor.  Activities are appropriate for all ages and supplies are provided.

Dance Performance 2:00 p.m.
White Horse and Little Ponies Dance Group (Sioux/Santo Domingo/San Felipe) will perform a variety of Plains dances styles in colorful regalia. 

October is Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month at The Albuquerque Museum.
Sunday, October 21 at 2:00 pm
The Albuquerque Museum is pleased to offer a talk by renowned sculptor, Michael Naranjo. This program is in celebration of Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month, an international initiative to promote art and culture by and for people with sight loss. Naranjo, a resident of Santa Clara Pueblo, lost his sight in 1968 due to an injury in Vietnam. In his talk he will explore his life's work, with a particular focus on The Dancer, part of the museum's permanent collection.  This talk is free with museum admission.

New Exhibition Public Opening
Saturday, October 20
Miniatures 2007 features paintings and sculptures by some of the leading artists in the United States.  All the works are for sale with the proceeds going to support the Albuquerque Museum Foundation's programs.

Mudding Day at Casa San Ysidro
Friday, October 26, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Don't miss this unique experience at historic Casa San Ysidro. The public is invited to participate in the fourth annual Dia De Enjarrar or Mudding Day at the museum's historic house located in the Village of Corrales. Come learn how to mud plaster. Volunteers of all ages are invited. Tools and lunch will be provided.
Driving directions to Casa San Ysidro:  Take Corrales Road 3.2 miles north from Alameda, turn west at Old Church Road. Casa San Ysidro is located just around the bend. For more information call 898-3915.

Free General Admission Days at The Albuquerque Museum
The first Wednesday of the month is a free general admission day.   General admission to the Museum is also free every Sunday morning from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Saturdays in October - Family Art Workshops – 1 – 2:30 pm
All supplies are provided.  Free with Museum general admission. 

Tours
Sculpture Garden Walking Tours - Docent-guided tours are offered Tuesday-Saturday at 10 a.m. during the months of April through November.

Old Town Walking Tours - Docent-guided tours are offered Tuesday-Sunday at 11 a.m. from mid-March to mid-December.
Except as noted, all events are free with Museum admission.

Exhibitions

Exploring Multiple Dimensions
The Society of Layerist in Multi-Media have a 25 year history of local and national shows in museums and galleries both in the United States and abroad. An exhibition of over 100 artists from this society are on display at the Albuquerque Museum in an exhibition entitled Exploring Multiple Dimensions. Exhibit continues through October 7.

Brought to Light: A Great Depression Era Photographer's Study of Albuquerque Businesses
A photography collection documenting businesses in Albuquerque in the early 1930s. On display through June 2008

Cultural Renaissance: 40 Years of The Albuquerque Museum
A history of The Albuquerque Museum with selected artifacts and art from the collections. On display through September 2008.

The Sewell Family: Old Town and the Tourist Pottery Market
The story of the Sewell family's role in the preservation of the Old Town Armijo properties, and the subsequent revival of the local tourist pottery market.  On display through November 25.

Out of the Bag
An exhibition featuring never-before exhibited examples of handbags and pouches from the Museum's permanent collection. Out of the Bag includes Victorian beaded reticules and mesh purses, fringed "flapper" bags, Plateau, Plains and Apache beaded pouches, and a silver filigree dance purse. On display through October 7.

Common Ground: Art in New Mexico
Common Ground is a permanent art exhibition highlighting a significant amount of museum-owned works from the late 19th century to the present day. It is displayed chronologically giving visitors a glimpse into the evolution of art in New Mexico.

Four Centuries: A History of Albuquerque
A permanent exhibition of local history depicting four hundred years of the history of Albuquerque and the Rio Grande Valley region.  Look over early maps, arms and armor and weaving.  Learn about trade routes, colonial life and statehood era relics.
